“A non-exhaustive guide to ableist language to avoid. Happy Disability Pride Month! TW ableism Thread”, Queer, disabled author and digital artist Jaecyn Bone wrote on Twitter, Saturday.

The tweet and thread have since been deleted, but here are a couple of sample screenshots.

Bone then goes on to list terms that one should not use in order to raise social awareness of how to properly respect people in the “disabled” community.

This is the first time in my over 28 years of living on the earth that I knew there was even such a thing as “Disability Pride Month.” To be honest, I find the whole notion of a pride month for people with disabilities to be just as utterly ridiculous as all the other pride or history months for any other people group.

As a man with cerebral palsy, I find the idea of a “pride month” for disabled people to be very exclusionary. I have fought to be fit in most of my life, and to be treated just as a man and not defined by my disability or the wheelchair I use as a result. “Disability Pride Month” turns all that effort to stand out as an individual on its head.

Yes, I have cerebral palsy, but I am not defined by my condition. I want to be judged by my character and respected for my credibility as a commentator and writer who stands up for individual liberty—not coddled because society thinks I am not strong enough to face some of the harsh realities of life because I was dealt a bad hand. On top of the whole dumb idea, Mr. Bone wants to lecture the rest of the world on what we should and shouldn’t say dare we offend a disabled person.

Life is hard and most people with disabilities know a thing or two about hardships that able-bodied people will never know firsthand. The last thing I want is for anyone to treat me like a baby just because I use a wheelchair to get around.

I am technically considered a minority because of my cerebral palsy, but I will not be used as a pawn to attempt to destroy America. That is precisely what social justice warrior activists like Jaecyn Bone want—to divide the people of this country by class, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and every other possible way so that communists can fundamentally transform everything that made us the greatest country in the history of the world. If the citizens of this country think that our nation is fundamentally evil, what is to stop authoritarians from pushing for a total transformation? That is the plan, my friends, and it always has been since the “Progressive Era” began in the 1890s.

America is the greatest country in the world. Only in this country could a disabled man such as myself rise from literally nothing to a well-established journalist/commentator in just two-and-a-half years, if I didn’t have the good fortune of being born in this country, who knows what would have become of me? While there are several warts on America’s national nose, the world is a much better place because of the founding of this country. Instead of celebrating this fact, Mr. Bone took the opportunity to crap on this country on its 245th birthday.

“Happy Independence Day ONLY to white land- owning men. And fuck everyone else I guess.” Bone said Sunday.

While this country has strayed far from its roots as a freedom-loving, free-market nation, it is only because of these roots that a man like me is able to rise to his fullest potential and reach his dreams instead of being held back by circumstances beyond my control.

It is in this spirit that I say keep your “disabled pride.” I am Caleb Shumate, a liberty-loving American. I am not a victim. Keep your victimhood Olympics and let those of us who are willing reach the dreams no one ever thought possible!

In the latest episode of Revolution’s Revival, I welcome my friend Shane Hazel to the program.

The host of the popular “Radical” podcast joins me to discuss how lovers of liberty can best resist the tyranny of Texas Rep. Sheila Lee Jackson’s H.R. 127, which would set up national gun registration and make popular gun accessories illegal. We also talk about how he “spoiled” the Georgia senate race for the two-party system in the state, the true cost of war, and his perspective as a Marine combat vet, and much more. (Caution: the portion where we discuss war is graphic and not suitable for children.)

Shane also tells me how he wants to help make Georgia the freest state in the nation when he runs for governor in 2022. We touch on a few aspects of his plan to make this a reality through both the farming of cannabis and energy independence. In discussing the future of the liberty movement and what he thinks is the best route moving forward, we agree that Libertarians have the ideas on our side, but we can and must show more love and empathy to people who think about things differently.

In liberty,

Caleb

In the latest episode of Revolution’s Revival with Caleb Shumate, I discuss what I believe is the worst gun control bill in American history and how it would effectively destroy the average American’s right to self-defense.

H.R. 127, also known as the “ Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act,” was introduced in the House of Representatives on January 6 by Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee (D-TX).

If this bill were to become law, it would render the second amendment useless, setting up a national gun registry of all firearms, making all popular firearm attachments illegal, and limiting the amount of ammunition an individual can have, among other atrocities.

I provide my audience with an often-overlooked argument in favor of gun rights as gun control practically makes disabled individuals victims. It robs them of the only truly effective means to ensure their self-preservation as I discuss in my classic article, “Colt Made Me Equal”: A Disabled Libertarian’s Case For Gun Ownership.

It is my belief that I have a strong case in defense of our natural rights of life, liberty, and property. In this modern age, I see myself as a canary in a coal mine, sounding the wake-up alarm to all Americans to stand up and fight for liberty. We must not allow this garbage to stand!

In the latest episode of Revolution’s Revival, I discuss a bill introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) Monday that would limit the number of terms Senators and Congressmen are eligible to serve.

Is this the proper way to address the issue of “draining the swamp” that is our nation’s capital, or could this be an abdication of our responsibility as citizens of a Constitutional Republic?

In an op-ed penned for The Washington Post in 2016, Senator Cruz stated that according to a Rassmussen report conducted in October of that year, 74% of people supported a constitutional amendment that would place term limits for senators and members of Congress.

This episode may not make me popular with many listeners, but I promised that I’d always be open and honest with my audience about what it is that I believe. It is my firm conviction that we must choose leaders from our own communities that best represent our interests. While I am convinced Ted’s heart is in the right place on this issue, his proposed solution doesn’t strike the problem at is root.

I would like to publicly extend an invitation to Senator Ted Cruz to come on my show and state his case for his position on the subject of amending the U.S. Constitution to limit the number of terms a senator or congressman may serve. The door is always open to you, Ted, as I feel discussing this topic in podcast format would benefit the American people.

“I’m not the sort to back away from a fight. I don’t believe in shrinking from anything.
It’s not my speed; I’m a guy who meets adversities head on.” – John Wayne

These words from John Wayne certainly embody a large part of the man I have become and continue to grow into daily. My life has undoubtedly taught me a thing or two about what it’s like to travel uphill on a rocky road. But as they say, nothing worth doing is ever easy.

It is with this in mind that I am proud to announce the launch of my brand new podcast, “Revolution’s Revival with Caleb Shumate. It has been a dream of mine my entire adult life to be a professional political commentator. My desire to do this has never been for self-promotion or fame or because I desire to be a celebrity of any kind, but only because I deeply love America.

I love the promise of America, a nation whose founding documents recognize the natural rights of all people. We are a nation built on the idea that you can be whomever you desire as long as you are willing to put in the time and hard work to make your dreams a reality.

Today, we have strayed so far from the ideas of personal and economic liberty that many people wouldn’t be able to recognize what America is supposed to be. Others would say that this country is dead, and that it’s too far gone and we should throw in the towel. To those who have this mentality, I say get in the fight or get out of the way!

I started Revolution’s Revival to breathe new life into that which is thought to be dead! We must restore the spirit of revolution, which made this country the best the world has ever known. This may not be an easy task, but I assure you that liberty will win the day!

If you have followed my writing at The Libertarian Republic, you know all too well how committed I am to the ideas of liberty and that I will stop at nothing to accomplish my mission.

In the premiere episode of “Revolution’s Revival with Caleb Shumate” I discuss my background in media, my mission to restore liberty, and renew my promise to always be open and honest with all of you as my audience.

“I do so dearly believe that no half-heartedness and no worldy fear must turn us aside from following the light unflinchingly.”  – Letter to Edith, quoted in J.R.R. Tolkien: a biography (1977) by Humphrey Carpenter

The words of Tolkien certainly ring true in my life’s story as I reflect back on the two years I have spent writing as a member of the staff here at The Libertarian Republic. It was my passion for liberty and deep love for America that eventually led me to TLR’s doors, and it is that same spirit that will carry me through to the next chapter of my career in media as a contributor at The Western Journal.

My story is one of triumph in the face of what some may consider impossible odds. It has been my dream my entire adult life to be a political commentator with my own national radio/television program. This is a dream many would consider to be quite a longshot for anyone, much less a man born with cerebral palsy with no college degree in any sort of field that would help me break into political media. All I had when I came to TLR was my name, an in-depth knowledge of our founding principles and American history, and a colossal-sized dream.

I first became aware of Austin Petersen during his 2016 Libertarian Party presidential campaign. Little did I know that my introduction to this radical liberty-loving Missourian would set me on the path to living my dreams as well as blessing my life with an exceptional and loyal friend.

Two years later, during his Republican Senate Campaign, he did an Instagram livestream in which he spoke about his company, The Libertarian Republic, and how his mission was to help people get a start in politics to go on to make changes in the political sphere for liberty. I knew in my heart that this was my chance to use my gifts to make the world a better place, and so I reached out to Austin and started my career in media with TLR.

In two years, I have risen to the top of the ranks at TLR and achieved things I never thought possible. I have written articles which have been retweeted by big names in Conservative media like Glenn Beck, The Blaze Media, Ben Shapiro, and Micheal Knowles (of The Daily Wire). It has been my honor to interview celebrities and prominent political activists such as my favorite rapper Kemo the Blaxician of Delinquent Habits, and Pro-Life Activist Abby Johnson, who I never imaged I’d have the privilege of speaking to. I have been a regular guest on the KWOS Morning Show with Austin Petersen and John Marsh, which has allowed me to sharpen my persona, further preparing myself for my ultimate goal of having my own radio/television program.

It is the light of liberty that lead me here, and it is the same light that now illuminates my path as I make my next pit stop on the road to my destiny, as a contributor at The Western Journal. As one chapter closes and another is opening, I reaffirm my commitment to all of you as my readers that you can always count on me to be honest and open with you no matter the circumstances. I also reaffirm my pledge to the idea of America which made this country a shining city on hill and an example to the rest of world. I will use every gift and talent I possess to defend the ideas of economic and personal liberty as they are fundamental to the longevity of the human race.

I want to thank Austin Petersen for allowing me to write as a member of the staff at TLR and helping me reach my dreams. You recognized my gifts from the very beginning and have helped me to make them a reality. You have been much more than a boss, but a dear friend whom I love more than I can express. Our friendship means more to me than you’ll ever know and you’ll always have a special place in my heart. I also want to thank my dear friend and editor Camellia Peterson, who like Austin, has seen what I could be and polished me until I shined. You have been a loyal friend and support system and I wouldn’t be here without you. I love both of you with all my heart.

I also want to thank my family for their love and support over the past two years. There are far too many to list you all, but my love and gratitude are with all of you.

Most of all, I want to thank Christ for loving me and blessing me with my gifts, which allow me to do my part to make this world a better place. Without Him, none of this would have ever been possible. It is through Him that I live and breathe and that my story was made possible.

As my platform grows, I will always be grateful for my time at The Libertarian Republic and remember it fondly. My road to victory has not been an easy one, but my hope will always be that it inspires others to live their own dreams.

As Thomas Paine said, “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph”.

Editor’s Note: It has been an honor and privilege getting to know Caleb and I am thankful for the contributions he has made to the TLR community. He is well-loved by many, including myself, for his huge heart for liberty, America, and her people. Caleb has been an inspiration to me, overcoming so much more than many of us will ever know. Helping writers like Caleb hone their craft is why I began working with TLR. It has been a delight to watch him grow in skill and confidence. I wish him only the best as he begins this new chapter—and I look forward to reading it!  — Camellia

From the evil history of the welfare state and gun control to how I became the warrior for liberty you see today, we cover it all when “everyone’s favorite bearded libertarian”  joins Banks Wise and Shane Hazel for The Rebellion Podcast.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Banks and Shane last Saturday for episode 120 of The Rebellion Podcast. I trust it will be one of the most entertaining and informative podcast episodes you will likely ever hear combined with a fresh take on the ideas of personal and economic liberty!

In this episode, we discuss many topics from my personal journey in the liberty movement, how I became a writer for Austin Petersen’s website The Libertarian Republic, to my take on different policy issues in America today from my perspective as a disabled libertarian.

Anyone who has read what I have written in the past or heard me speak knows that I am a passionate warrior for liberty, and that I speak truth boldly without a filter. This interview on The Rebellion is certainly no exception to that rule.

I want to thank Shane and Banks for allowing me to come on their show and speak about the ideas of liberty. I also want to give a special thanks to my friend Quest Fanning for making this happen.  I hope all those who listen come away having learned something new. More importantly, I hope you come away feeling refreshed and inspired to fight for freedom in their own way.

As Thomas Jefferson said, “I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.”

This is the story of a man who has one of the most unique perspectives on the ideas of economic and personal liberty that you will probably ever hear. To get to know this man, we must go back to the very beginning – to a tiny four-pound baby born ten weeks early, fighting for his life from the moment he entered the world.

I, Caleb Scott Shumate, was born to parents Scott and Sherry Shumate on December 24, 1992 in Greenville, North Carolina. As I mentioned, I had to fight for my life from day one because I was born two-and-a-half months premature which resulted in my diagnosis of cerebral palsy at 18 months old.

I was fortunate to have parents who have loved me dearly from the beginning, and have pushed and motivated me to become independent for as long as I can remember. I daresay that independent spirit instilled in me since my earliest days played an important role in molding the warrior for liberty that I am today.

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a deep love for history of all kinds, but especially American history. Perhaps it was partly due to my limited ability to play like most kids I went to school with, but my love for history was my primary source of entertainment in my free time because I always saw history as it is – a long and continuous story of individuals who lived and died, some of which did wonderful things and some great evil. It would come alive to me. I could almost feel I was in the places and times I was reading about. So while most kids played during recess, I had my nose stuck in a book of some sort.

I was a fun-loving child who loved life and always tried to be a friend to nearly everyone I knew. However, that started to change when I was 13, and my family had to move from the mountains of North Carolina where I grew up to the Eastern Coastal Plain. I left behind my grandparents (whom I have always been close to) and the friends I had known nearly my whole life. When I reached my junior year of high school, I was bullied pretty severely, which caused me to struggle with depression and suicidal tendencies. These worsened as I entered adulthood and fought with everything a young man deals with – from trying to find his place in the world to finding love and facing constant rejection.

I was placed on Medicare and Medicaid at the age of 18 against my will. Even before I became politically active in my early twenties or even knew what a libertarian was, and the racist history behind the Welfare State and its ties to eugenics and literal modern-day slavery, I knew in my heart that it was morally wrong for me to live off money that was not earned by my own labor. This flies in the face of every stereotype that people would expect from me as a “disabled” man. They would expect me to be okay with sitting on my ass and collecting a check from the government each month. I am not only dissatisfied with it, but I am also angered by it.

Why am I angry? I am angry because I have been unable to work and make a living in this world because, on top of all the struggles I face when it comes to finding work as a natural consequence of my disability, the Welfare State makes it impossible for me to even attempt to make a living. If I do find work and make above a certain amount, I lose my “benefits.”

You see, this is exactly how Progressives want it. Don’t believe me? Don’t take my word for it. Read the words of Royal Meeker, a Princeton economist who was the commissioner of labor statistics for Woodrow Wilson’s administration. He easily explained how policies such as the minimum wage and welfare state could be used to exterminate individuals like myself, the so-called undesirables – “It is much better to enact a minimum- wage law even if it deprives the unfortunates of work…better the state should support the inefficient wholly and prevent the multiplication of the breed than subsidize the incompetence and unthrift, enabling them to bring forth more of their kind.”

I can’t begin to describe to you, my dear readers, how livid, but honestly unsurprised I was by this discovery. To think that someone would be so evil as to use force to extort money from the American worker, and to then use that money in an attempt to keep the physically disabled from working so they could quite literally do with economic power what Hitler did with the gas chambers! I tell you, my friends, economic liberty is truly individual liberty, and I will not stop until the welfare state is utterly demolished.

I know firsthand how wasteful and inefficient these programs are. As I type this, I sit in an uncomfortable wheelchair that squeaks worse than an old rocking chair just from sitting down. Bolts that hold the back together have come out unassisted several times, and I can only get a replacement once every five years. This is just one of the many pains in my ass I have had to endure. I say this not for sympathy, but only to tell you that I know personally how much more effective personal charity is than government welfare. I know from life experience what it’s like not being able to get the help I need when I need it. The only honest and effective solution to these ills is the complete and total abolition of the welfare state and freeing up private social institutions such as churches, synagogues, etc. to do the work they want to do. We have unlimited rights, but our rights also come with certain responsibilities. If we want the government to get off our backs and do less, we as individuals must do more.

I am a libertarian because I believe that there is both good and bad in all individuals, but if given the freedom to do what is moral, more will choose the high road over the low one. I believe that being forced to do good for your fellow man at gunpoint is genuinely not good at all.

I want to say a particular word of thanks to Austin Petersen and my number one editor, Camellia Plosser. Thank you, both. Austin, for giving me a platform so that I can advocate for ideas we both cherish, for polishing my talent until I shine, as well as providing an avenue to better myself in life. But most of all, thank you for your love, support, and friendship. Camellia, thank you for making sure I always sound my best, and making sure my writing reaches its peak performance and is always crystal clear. I am grateful for your kind heart and love. Without the two of you and your encouragement, these words might not have been printed. I am truly grateful for that.

I also want to say a word of thanks to my family and friends who have known about my battles, loved me without fail, and supported me to get to this point. Thank you also to Bobby Aycock and Ken Tucker for seeing my personal gift for communicating when I couldn’t, and for being unwilling to allow me to waste them.

I have been through hell in my personal life, and it has hardened and strengthened me for this fight. Not unlike the signers of the Declaration of Independence, I pledge my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor to the pursuit of liberty. I was born a warrior forged in fire and I will never stop fighting until the battle is won! I have nowhere to go but up, and I see a bright future ahead. But, we must fight hard to come out on the other side. I am convinced through studying our history, that we will weather the storm – because that’s who we are when the chips are down.
